Technically part of April’s Pittsburgh Gallery Crawl, we believe Gianna Paniagua’s Vascular Caverns stands on its own.
Paniagua painstakingly hand cut the paper that would turn 707 Penn Gallery into a cavern of her imagination. For six months, Paniagua cut out webbing that would overlay walls usually reserved for 12×18 prints. The patterns of artificial veins reflect Paniagua’s personal journey of healing being a recipient of a heart transplant.
Vascular Caverns is a wonderful utilization and re-imagination of space not typically seen in Pittsburgh. Paniagua’s technique is a meditation onto itself. And much like the Tibetan sand mandelas, her work invites you to join the spiritual journey before it’s gone.
